Young people less often make a choice

Of the young people up to 25 years old, 41 percent have not made a choice. They are thus most often registered as no objection to organ donation in the Donor Register. In 2022, this was still 36 percent.

Increase in no permission among young people who do make a choice

Of the 18 to 25-year-olds who have made a choice, over 45 percent do not give permission for organ donation. In 2022, this was still 41 percent. Among those aged 25 to 75, 38 percent do not give permission. Only those over 75 give permission less often than other age groups (52 percent). In 2022, this was still 56 percent.

Neder-Betuwe and Urk have the fewest donor registrations

Residents of Neder-Betuwe are the least often registered as donors at 43 percent, followed by residents of Urk (47 percent). Residents of the municipality of Groningen are most often registered as donors (68 percent), followed by Rozendaal (67 percent).

In Urk, people make the least often a choice and are thus registered as no objection to organ donation (32 percent). Explicit permission (15 percent) is also the lowest in Urk. The choice that a relative may decide after death (22 percent) is twice as high in Urk as the average.

Men are more likely than women not to make a choice

Men are almost one and a half times more likely than women not to have made a choice. People with primary education or a vocational diploma are one and a half times more likely not to make a choice than those with a higher professional or university degree. If they do choose, it is almost twice as often no permission. This is comparable to the differences between people who were not born in the Netherlands and those who were.

61 thousand people made a different choice last year

People can change their choice in the Donor Register at any time. In 2024, 61 thousand people did so. The majority changed from no objection to their own choice. 15 thousand people changed from no objection to no permission, 11 thousand from no objection to permission or to a decision by relatives. Also, people who previously did not give permission changed their choice: 5 thousand people who in 2024 still chose no permission gave permission this year or let a relative decide.
