In 2025, the number of self-employed without employees declined after years of growth. The decline is strongest among young people. There are especially fewer young self-employed in healthcare and welfare. This is evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) within the framework of the National Youth Monitor.

In 2025, 86 thousand young people aged 15 to 27 had a main job as self-employed without employees (zzp’er). That is 19 thousand fewer than a year earlier, a decrease of 18 percent. Among those aged 27 and older, the number of self-employed also decreased, but the decline is proportionally smaller (-4 percent). In total, the number of self-employed decreased by 62 thousand to 1.2 million.
