Companies using AI are larger, invest more in ICT, and apply for patents more often than companies that do not use AI. They also have a higher added value. Whether this is due to the use of AI cannot be determined from this first exploratory study on the characteristics of companies using AI technology by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). More research is needed.

Of the companies that used AI technologies in 2024, 11 percent were large companies with 250 or more employees. Almost a quarter had 50 to 250 employees. Of the companies using AI, 65 percent were small (10 to 50 employees).

Of the companies not using AI, 3 percent were large (more than 250 people) and 16 percent medium-sized (50 to 250 people). Among companies not using AI, 81 percent were small. Companies with fewer than 10 employees were not included in this analysis.

Of all companies using three AI technologies, 13 percent were large companies. Of the companies using four or more technologies, 19 percent were large.
