In the past thirty years, nearly 2.2 million new homes have been built. In urban areas, proportionally more multi-family homes (such as flats or apartment complexes), rental homes, and smaller homes are constructed. In rural areas, mainly larger single-family owner-occupied homes are built. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
Of the nearly 2.2 million new homes built from 1995 through 2024, over 1.1 million homes were built in rural areas and over 1.0 million in urban areas. Here, urban areas mean places where homes already existed, in cities or villages.

From 1995 to 2009, most new homes were built in rural areas, but in the past fifteen years, more have been built in urban areas.
