The consumption figures relate to volume figures. This means they have been adjusted for price changes. Additionally, adjustments have been made for changes in the composition of shopping days. According to the CBS Consumption Radar, the conditions for consumption in September were less unfavorable than in August.
Consumers purchased 1.9 percent more durable goods in August than in August 2024. They especially bought more shoes, clothing, and electronic devices. Households spent 0.3 percent more on food and beverages, adjusted for price changes, than in August 2024. Finally, households consumed 1.0 percent less of other goods (energy, motor fuels, and personal care products) in August.
Consumers consumed 1.4 percent more services in August. They particularly spent more on transportation and communication and in the hospitality sector than in August 2024. Expenditures on services account for more than half of total domestic consumption expenditures by households.
The CBS publishes monthly reports on the conditions for consumption in the consumption radar. Household consumption is linked to consumer expectations, the labor market situation, and the development of their wealth. The indicators in the radar correlate well with household consumption, but an improvement in conditions does not necessarily mean higher consumption growth.
According to the consumption radar for September, the conditions for consumption in September were less unfavorable than in August. This was mainly because consumers were less negative about their financial position in the coming 12 months and the year-on-year increase in the working population was greater.
