In 2024, data centers consumed 5,100 GWh of electricity, which is 4.6 percent of the total electricity consumption in the Netherlands. This equals the electricity consumption of nearly 2 million homes. The increase in electricity consumption by data centers continues, albeit at a slower pace. This was reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) based on new figures.

There are approximately 200 data centers in the Netherlands, most of which are located around Amsterdam. There are different types of data centers: besides the large ones from cloud providers and tech companies, some companies and institutions (such as universities and hospitals) have their own facilities for large-scale data storage and processing. This latter group is not included in this report; these figures only concern the electricity connections where the data center is the main activity.

Electricity supply to these data centers increased by 37 percent compared to 2021, reaching 5,100 GWh. The percentage relative to the total electricity consumption in the Netherlands rose from 3.3 percent in 2021 to 4.6 percent in 2024. This increase is smaller than between 2018 and 2021, when electricity supply to data centers increased by 58 percent.
