According to the second calculation by CBS, the gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2025 increased by 0.2 percent compared to the first quarter of 2025. In the first calculation, published on July 30, the growth was recorded at 0.1 percent. The second calculation of GDP is published approximately 85 days after the end of the quarter.
The growth of the economy is 0.1 percentage point higher than in the first calculation. This is mainly due to an upward adjustment of consumption by households. The trade balance and investments have also been adjusted upwards, while government consumption has been adjusted downwards. The increase in GDP in the second quarter of 2025 is mainly attributed to investments. Additionally, government consumption and household consumption contributed positively.
Second Calculation
The second calculation is made 85 days after the end of the quarter. The first calculation, made 30 days after the end of a quarter, is based on the information available at that time. After this first calculation, more information becomes continuously available about the Dutch economy, such as from construction, business services, hospitality, government, healthcare, and financial institutions.
The absolute adjustment of the second calculation compared to the first calculation was on average 0.1 percent point over the past five years (2020-2024). The two extremes were -0.4 and 0.7 percentage points, respectively in 2024 and 2021.
Adjustment of Growth in Previous Quarters
With each new calculation of GDP, CBS also re-determines the seasonally adjusted series of previously published quarters. The growth figures of the previous three quarters have not been adjusted.
Growth Compared to the Second Quarter of 2024
Compared to a year earlier, the economy grew by 1,7 percent in the second quarter. According to the first calculation, this was 1.5 percent. This adjustment is also mainly attributed to consumption by households. Household consumption contributed the most to the year-on-year growth. Furthermore, the contributions from investments and government consumption were also positive.
Number of Jobs Increases by 28 Thousand
According to the second calculation, the number of jobs for employees and self-employed persons increased by 28 thousand in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the first quarter of 2025. The first calculation recorded an increase of 24 thousand jobs.
Compared to the second quarter of 2024, there were 87 thousand more jobs for employees and self-employed persons in the second quarter of 2025 according to the second calculation. This was 80 thousand in the first calculation.
The job figures have been adjusted based on supplemented source information.
