Growth of Goods Trade with the US in the First Half of 2025
This article discusses the growth of goods trade between the Netherlands and the US in the first half of 2025.
In the first half of 2025, the export value of goods to the United States was 10.5 percent higher than in the same period in 2024. The import value was 1.0 percent higher. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) based on preliminary figures on international trade. Although Dutch trade with the United States is under pressure due to announced import tariffs, the mutual trade relationship still grew in the first half of 2025. Exports to the US were primarily driven by re-exports of goods, which increased by 24.6 percent, compared to the export value of Dutch-made goods, which increased by 4.5 percent.
The increase in export value to the United States was mainly due to more exports in February, March, and April. Imports of goods from the US fell by 9.0 percent in May but increased again by 11.0 percent in June. This was mainly due to more machines and transport equipment and chemical products being imported.
Also Increase in Trade between the US and EU
This also applied to other EU countries: the import and export value of the EU as a whole with the US grew in the first half of 2025, but there was a declining trend. This also corresponds with the trend in US goods trade with the rest of the world: the US imported significantly more in the first quarter of 2025 compared to a year earlier, possibly because companies anticipated announced import tariffs, while trade values in the second quarter were comparable to a year earlier.
