In 2025, over 83 thousand hectares of consumption potatoes were cultivated, nearly 9 percent more than a year earlier. The gross yield per hectare is 53.5 tons, almost a quarter higher than last year. The total gross harvest is estimated at 4.4 million tons (+37 percent), the highest yield in the past 25 years.
In addition to an increase in area, favorable weather conditions also contributed to the high yields. The many sunny days ensured that the potatoes received plenty of sunlight, which promoted crop growth.
As in 2024, a record amount of seed onions was cultivated in 2025. The area increased by nearly 4 percent compared to a year earlier. The gross yield per hectare is 52.1 tons, 11 percent higher than in 2024. The total gross harvest was 1.7 million tons (+17 percent), never before so large. A larger area and many hours of sunshine also contributed to high yields for this crop. However, quality may be lower due to common soil diseases, which can cause higher losses.
The growth in the seed onion area is due to more red seed onions being cultivated (+35 percent). Yellow seed onions were cultivated less, with an area decrease of nearly 2 percent. Due to the higher yield per hectare, the gross yield of yellow seed onions increased to an estimated 1.4 million tons (+13 percent). The yield of red seed onions is estimated at 290 thousand tons (+45 percent).
The gross yield of wheat was at its lowest level since 2000 in 2024. The wheat harvest was particularly poor then due to low yields of winter wheat. This was partly due to the wet autumn of 2023, which hindered sowing. In 2025, sowing and growing conditions were more favorable, and the area and gross yield are back in line with previous years. It is expected that 1.1 million tons of wheat were harvested, nearly 70 percent more than in 2024 and 3 percent more than in 2023. 92 percent of all wheat is winter wheat.
In June, CBS published figures on the cultivated area of arable crops. These figures now include the expected hectare yields. These are estimated by experts based on the latest available information. Based on the cultivated area and expected hectare yields, CBS calculates the gross yields. The final harvest figures for 2025, based on a survey among arable farming companies, will be announced at the end of January 2026.
