Short-term price developments

In the quick estimate, consumer prices fell by 0.7 percent in January compared to December. A caveat when comparing two different months in the year is that seasonal influences must be taken into account. For example, clothing is cheaper during sales. Prices are temporarily lower then, but this is not a structural price decrease.

Price development of product groups

The quick estimate also includes the price development of several product groups. These are aggregates of spending categories on a particular theme, such as all services. On February 12, the price development of all CPI categories will be published.

December 2025

Quick estimate HICP

CBS publishes two different inflation figures. One based on the consumer price index (CPI) and one based on the European harmonised consumer price index (HICP). The quick estimate of inflation in the Netherlands according to the HICP was 2.2 percent in January. In December, inflation according to the HICP was 2.7 percent. The December figure has been revised, initially it was 2.5 percent.

The main difference between the CPI and the HICP for the Netherlands is that the HICP does not take into account the costs of living in owner-occupied housing. In the CPI, these costs are calculated based on the development of housing rents.

New CPI base year from 2026

From 2026, the CPI and the HICP use a new base year, from 2015=100 to 2025=100. This quick estimate for January 2026 is the first publication in this new base year. More information about the transition can be found in the methodological document The consumer price index from 2026.
