Youth More Negative About Crime, Population Density, and Mentality
Young adults in 2024 are more negative about crime, population density, and mentality than in previous years, with differences across education levels.
Young adults in 2024 were more often negative than in 2018 about crime, the number of people in the Netherlands, and the mentality of the population. Higher professional education (HBO) and university (WO) graduates most often consider environmental pollution a major problem, while young adults in secondary education or vocational education (MBO) most often see crime as a problem. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) based on the Annual Report National Youth Monitor 2025. In 2024, 49 percent of 18- to 25-year-olds considered crime and environmental pollution to be (very) big problems. Forty-three percent see the number of people in the Netherlands and the mentality of the population as major problems. Young adults are more negative about these social issues than in 2018; for example, the number of people in the Netherlands is seen as a problem more than twice as often. Opinions on environmental pollution have hardly changed.
