The decline in mussel production is mainly due to natural factors. For example, more fresh water flows in because it rains more often and there is less food available for the mussels.
More than two-thirds of the mussels produced are organic (68 percent).
Oysters are cultivated on plots in the Oosterschelde and the Grevelingenmeer. A quarter of the plot area is in the Grevelingenmeer. In the Netherlands, two types of oysters are cultivated, the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) and the Zeeland Creuse, also called the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas).
In 2024, 27.3 million flat and Creuse oysters were cultivated (2.7 thousand tons), 94 percent of which were Creuse oysters.
