More Natural Grassland and More Urban Development
In 2023, over 20 percent of the Dutch land area consisted of (semi)natural ecosystems, with increases in natural grassland and urban development.
In 2023, over 20 percent of the Dutch land area consisted of (semi)natural ecosystems, such as forests, heathlands, or dunes. This area grew by 285 square kilometers from 2016 through 2023, comparable to about 40 thousand soccer fields. During this period, especially more natural grassland was added, managed to promote biodiversity. Urban development also increased. This is shown by the newly revised figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Ecosystems are areas with a specific composition of plants, animals, soil, and other characteristics, ranging from forests and heathlands to arable land and built-up areas. The ecosystems in this report are classified according to the figures from the
Natural Capital Accounts. These internationally comparable figures may differ from other classifications and definitions.
Arable and Horticultural Areas and Agricultural Grassland Are the Largest Ecosystems
On land, arable and horticultural areas and agricultural (including other) grassland are the largest ecosystems (together 19.2 thousand square kilometers). Then follow built-up areas and various (semi)natural ecosystems, such as forest areas.
The Netherlands also consisted of 7.9 thousand square kilometers of fresh and saltwater, such as rivers and lakes, the Wadden Sea, and the North Sea.
