In 2019, there was a slight peak in the number of completed owner-occupied homes, after which this number decreased to almost 35 thousand in 2022. The number of private rental homes increased from 18 thousand in 2018 to over 25 thousand in 2022. About 1 in 5 completed homes was a corporation home.
Increasing number of apartments and homes smaller than 75 m2
From 2018, more apartments have been built every year. In 2018, 27 thousand apartments were completed, compared to over 38 thousand in 2022. In that year, more than half of all newly completed homes were apartments. The number of terraced houses (mid-terrace and corner houses) decreased between 2018 and 2022. In 2018, nearly 25 thousand terraced houses were completed, in 2022 this number was 20 thousand.
There were also more homes built with a smaller area. In 2022, more than a third of all newly completed homes were smaller than 75 m2, while between 2018 and 2020 this was a quarter. Both the percentage of new homes with an area of less than 50 m2 and with an area of 50 to 75 m2 increased.
Youth increasingly first occupants of new rental homes
Youths under 30 are increasingly the first occupants of a new home. In most cases, this involves a private rental home: in almost half of the private rental homes built between 2018-2022, youths under 30 years old moved in. Among all age groups, youths least often buy a new home.
Older people aged 65 or older are also increasingly the first occupants of a new home. However, their share is still smaller than that of other age groups. The largest group of first occupants is still between 30 and 45 years old.
