For 0.6 thousand new homes, the building permit was withdrawn, compared to 0.8 thousand a year earlier. In addition, permits for 3.7 thousand new commercial buildings were issued this quarter. This is 1.1 thousand fewer than a year earlier.
14.8 thousand new homes were built, which is 2.3 thousand fewer than in the same period last year.
In the third quarter, 2.1 thousand homes were demolished, 1.8 thousand homes were removed from the housing stock due to renovation, and 4.5 thousand homes were added through renovation or extension. Altogether, 15.2 thousand homes were added.
3.1 thousand commercial buildings were newly built, compared to 3.3 thousand last year.
The number of new homes for which permits have been granted but have not yet been delivered – in the pipeline – increased by 8.1 thousand compared to the previous quarter. For commercial buildings, this is 0.7 thousand. In recent years, more homes have been permitted than built (corrected for the number of cancelled construction projects).
The permitted construction costs for all homes amount to 3.7 billion euros. This is 22 percent more than a year earlier. This information comes from surveys. For commercial buildings, the permitted construction costs in the third quarter were 1.7 billion euros, 8 percent lower than a year earlier.
The turnover in the construction industry (excluding project developers) was 4.8 percent higher in the third quarter than a year earlier. A year earlier, the increase was 3.3 percent. This is the sixth consecutive quarter of turnover growth.
In Civil and Utility Construction (B&U), turnover was 5.6 percent higher. This is the sector that builds homes. Last year, the increase was 2.7 percent. In the first quarter of 2024, turnover last declined.
The turnover of Ground, Water and Road Construction (GWW) was 7.0 percent higher. A year earlier, turnover increased by 5.0 percent. In the third quarter of 2022, turnover last shrank.
The turnover of specialized construction activities was 3.5 percent higher, about the same as the increase a year earlier. All sub-branches increased, except for other specialized construction activities, where turnover was 1.0 percent lower.
The domestic sales prices of the wood and construction materials industry rose by 2.3 percent last quarter, while turnover shrank by 1.0 percent.
In the third quarter, 115 companies in the entire construction sector went bankrupt. This is 14 fewer than in the second quarter of 2025. There are 29.5 thousand vacancies in this sector. 15 thousand vacancies were created and 16 thousand filled.
The number of permits for new homes is an indicator of the number of homes that will be built in the near future. Housing transformations, such as converting offices into homes, are not included in these figures. The number of permitted new homes is based on the Basic Registration Addresses and Buildings (the BAG).
