Most people who applied for asylum for the first time in the third quarter were Eritrean nationals (990 people). Syrians followed with 860 applications, 45 percent more than in the second quarter. This is the first increase since the fall of the Assad regime at the end of 2024. After these groups, most applications came from people with an unknown nationality (490) and people with Turkish nationality (425).
In the first nine months of 2025, 2,400 Eritreans applied for asylum for the first time. That is more than twice as many as in the same period last year. Also, 2,400 Syrians applied for asylum then, compared to 8,900 a year earlier.
In the third quarter, 4,600 family members joining later came to the Netherlands. This is the highest number since 2017. In the first nine months, there were 12,100 family members joining later, 40 percent more than a year earlier. Two-thirds of them came from Syria (3,100 people).
Great! Unfortunately, it is not free to keep Openrijk running. A cup of coffee would therefore be greatly appreciated :) Thank you!
