All age groups saw fewer museum visits, but the decline was greatest among those aged 65 and over. In 2024, there were 7.1 million museum visits by this group. That was 19 percent fewer visits than in 2019 (8.8 million). In the same period, the number of people aged 65 and over actually increased by 11 percent.
Of the 32 million museum visits, 8.8 million were by foreign tourists (28 percent of the total). In 2019, this was 10.3 million (30 percent of the total). After the corona pandemic, the number of foreign museum visits has increased annually, but in 2024 it is still almost 15 percent less than in 2019.
The number of foreign guests in Dutch accommodations has grown strongly in the same period: in 2024, foreign tourists booked 19 percent more overnight stays than in 2019.
At 11.9 million museum visits, the full price was paid: the standard admission price without discount. That is 7 percent less than in 2019. There were 24 percent fewer tickets sold with discounts. Examples of discounted museum visits are visits with a CJP pass, friends pass, or a local or regional discount pass. In 2024, there were more museum visits with a Museum Card (+2 percent). There were also 3 percent more free visits.
The average admission price visitors paid for a museum visit in 2024 is 22 percent higher than in 2019. This price increase corresponds with inflation (22.7 percent increase in the consumer price index). The price increase is proportionally greatest for the average admission price for children up to and including twelve years: a child ticket became more than 25 percent more expensive. Most of this price increase occurred between 2019 and 2021, while entrance prices for adults and seniors actually increased after 2021.
