Government Deficit of 3 Billion Euros in the First Half of 2025
In the first half of 2025, there was a government deficit of 3 billion euros. This is an important development in public finances.
In the first half of 2025, government expenditures were 3 billion euros higher than revenues. The government debt increased by nearly 1 billion euros to 492 billion euros in the first half of 2025. This is 42.7 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) based on preliminary figures on public finances. For the first time in four years, the government is in the red for the first half of the year. In mid-2024, there was still a surplus of 2 billion euros.
The government deficit expressed as a percentage of the gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to be 1.4 percent on an annual basis, from the third quarter of 2024 to the second quarter of 2025. The 2026 budget memorandum from the Ministry of Finance assumes a deficit of 25 billion euros for the whole of 2025, or 2.1 percent of GDP.
