Just over half of all industry classes produced less in August than in the same month a year earlier. Of the eight largest sectors, the repair and installation of machinery recorded the largest production increase, while the transport equipment industry realized the largest decline.
To determine the short-term development of production, it is best to look at figures adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects. From July to August, production increased by 1.7 percent.
The production adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects typically fluctuates significantly. Decreases and increases follow each other quickly. In May 2020, the production of the industry reached a low point. After that, an upward trend was initiated until May 2022. Since then, the trend has reversed.
Manufacturers were again less negative in September than a month earlier. They were particularly more positive about expected business activity.
Germany is an important market for the Dutch industry. The confidence of German producers was more negative in September than a month earlier (Eurostat). The calendar-adjusted production of the German industry was 5.1 percent lower in August than a year earlier. Compared to July, German production decreased by 5.5 percent (Destatis).
