The life expectancy of 65-year-olds in 2031 is expected to be 21.02 years, according to CBS. This means that a 65-year-old in 2031 is expected to live another 21 years. Policymakers use this figure to determine the future state pension age. This was reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

The life expectancy in 2031 is slightly lower in the latest forecast than in the 2024 forecast, when it was estimated at 21.08 years. When calculating these forecasts, CBS looks at the development of life expectancy in the past and how accurate previous expectations were.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, more people died than expected before the pandemic. This increase in mortality led to a lower life expectancy. Since 2022, life expectancy has been increasing again, but the recovery is slower than expected. Therefore, the forecast has now been adjusted downward.

The forecast describes the most likely development, but there are also uncertainties. More about this can be found in the last paragraph of this message.
