More than 8 out of 10 young people aged between 18 and 25 consume alcohol occasionally. Students in higher education (WO) drink more often. Among them, the proportion of heavy drinkers is also the highest (27 percent). This is evident from figures for the years 2022 to 2024 compiled by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

Almost 9 out of 10 WO students aged 18 to 25 say they consume alcohol drinks. Of all young people in this age category, 81 percent consume alcohol. The proportion of heavy drinkers is also higher among university students. Of WO students, 27 percent are heavy drinkers. This means that at least once a week, on one day, male students consume a minimum of six glasses and female students four. Among all young people aged 18 to 25, 19 percent are heavy drinkers. Among MBO and HBO students, 15 and 24 percent fall into this category.
