In 2024, an average of 20 people died daily in the Netherlands due to accidental falls. With 7,300 fatalities from falls, this is a 5 percent increase compared to 2023 and over four times as many as twenty-five years earlier. Falls are the most common cause of unnatural death in the Netherlands. This is reported by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) based on an analysis of causes of death.
Death from an accidental fall occurs when someone accidentally falls, trips, or slips and dies within thirty days. Falling while using a vehicle, such as a car or bicycle, does not count; this is recorded as a traffic accident.

Of all 7,300 people who died after an accidental fall in 2024, more than half (56 percent) had a hip fracture as the primary injury from the fall. 21 percent had a head injury.
