The millionaire households had an average wealth of 1.6 million euros in 2024. This means that half have less wealth, and half have more. Non-millionaire households have an average of 110 thousand euros. Two-thirds of millionaires own 1 million to 2 million euros. A quarter has assets of 2 million to 5 million euros. A small part, 3 percent, has assets of 10 million euros or more.
Almost 40 percent of millionaire households have pension as their main source of income. The rest have work as their main source of income. Of those, 55 percent are self-employed. This share has been decreasing since 2014. Back then, 71 percent of working millionaires were self-employed. Of the non-millionaires with work as their main source of income, 14 percent are self-employed.
Of the assets of millionaires, 40 percent consists of significant interest (meaning they own at least 5 percent of the shares of a company) and entrepreneurial assets. A quarter consists of the value of the own home. For non-millionaires, the own home accounts for more than three-quarters of the assets, and significant interest and entrepreneurial assets account for 3 percent. With a larger wealth of millionaire households, the significant interest and entrepreneurial assets also become relatively larger. The share of the own home in total assets then decreases.
In North Holland and Utrecht, the highest proportion of millionaires live (7 percent of households). The two municipalities with the highest share of millionaires are located in North Holland: Bloemendaal and Laren. There, about 1 in 3 households is a millionaire. Other municipalities with many millionaires are Blaricum (25 percent), Heemstede (24 percent), and Wassenaar (23 percent).
The fewest millionaire households can be found in the provinces of Groningen, Flevoland, and Limburg. There, less than 4 percent of households have assets of 1 million euros or more. In the Limburg municipalities of Brunssum, Heerlen, and Kerkrade, the fewest millionaire households live, just like in Nissewaard in South Holland and Den Helder in North Holland.
