The Amsterdam Court of Appeal convicts two men for their role in the violence surrounding the Ajax – Maccabi Tel Aviv football match. This decision was made today in appeal. A 33-year-old man receives a 27-day prison sentence, equal to his pre-trial detention, and a community service order of 50 hours. A 25-year-old man is given a suspended prison sentence of 1 month and must also perform 100 hours of community service. These sentences differ from those previously imposed by the court.
Facts
The 33-year-old suspect was working as a taxi driver in the center of Amsterdam on the night of November 7 to 8, 2024. He was co-administrator of a WhatsApp group and spread information and instructions via that group to commit violence against the Maccabi supporters. By doing so, he was guilty of aiding and abetting violence. The 25-year-old suspect, together with a group of men, attacked the supporters on Damrak, kicked victims, and violently stole a scarf. By doing so, he was guilty of public violence.
Different from the court
The 33-year-old man stated that he was not aware of the violence against the Maccabi supporters. The court does not believe this because he drove around the center all evening and night, and from the content and frequency of the WhatsApp messages he sent, it follows that he must have known about the violence committed. The court imposed a six-week prison sentence on him. Due to his medical condition, which makes detention especially burdensome, the court finds a sentence equal to his pre-trial detention combined with community service appropriate. This means the man no longer has to go to prison.
The 25-year-old man admitted the violent acts. At the court, the 25-year-old man received an unconditional prison sentence of one month. Given the positive probation advice, his convincing expression of remorse, and insight into his behavior, the court imposes a suspended prison sentence of one month and 100 hours of community service.
Other suspects
The Amsterdam Court of Appeal is handling more cases related to the disturbances around the football match. These rulings will follow later.
