The airspace above the Penitentiary Institution (PI) in Vught will be permanently closed as of December 25, 2025. This marks the end of the temporary closure that has been in effect since July 1, 2022. The measure has been implemented to enhance safety in and around the institution and to prevent risks of smuggling, espionage, and escape attempts via aircraft.

Secretary of State for Justice and Security Arno Rutte: “With this permanent closure of airspace, we are taking an important step in combating continued criminal activity from detention. We ensure that prisoners no longer have the opportunity to smuggle in supplies or escape via drones or other aircraft. The safety of employees, residents, and our society is paramount.”

The decision follows a positive recommendation from the Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management and the Secretary of State for Defense, after a prior request from the Ministry of Justice and Security. The temporary closure has demonstrably contributed to reducing safety risks in recent years. Therefore, it has been decided to make the measure permanent.

The decision, accompanied by an explanation, has been published in the Official Gazette.
