Almost December 5th, time for a new poem full of facts we have reported on.
Sinterklaas has sailed for centuries,
through weather and wind, with steady pace.
He has seen the climate change over all these years,
two heatwaves this year, no other explanation.
Heathland fire, no rain in March,
Growing damage, we are not spared.
Simultaneous hurricanes, a very dry summer,
wet October, the Gulf Stream slowing down.
Time for action, and preferably right now,
measuring on the BES islands, and with the MTG-S1 satellite.
An expansion of the climate dashboard,
are we keeping pace with the climate agreement?
Additionally, we are preparing better,
with AI we quickly track extreme weather.
A live blog, the KNMI app, and heat power,
our weather warnings are now even better thought out.
This is necessary, new, disruptive weather is pouring down on us,
as you can read in our new extremes report*.
Sint is increasingly opting for sustainability, which makes him happy.
Global warming can be stopped, will you join?
Then Sint looks forward to the festive evening positively,
with a (pepper) nut package and some sweets for everyone.
KNMI Climate Poem by Karin van der Wiel and Lone Mokkenstorm
*Next week, 10 years after the Paris climate agreement, KNMI will release a new report on previously unseen extreme weather possible in today’s climate. ‘An Extreme Report’ will be published on December 12 on the website.
