In China, at 02:05 Dutch time (09:05 local time), a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck. The earthquake occurred in Tibet, southern China, at a depth of 10 kilometers, located at the intersection of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
The earthquake last night took place in a large but sparsely populated area. Still, numerous casualties have already been reported. The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks of magnitudes 4 and 5. These aftershocks will continue.

According to KNMI seismologist Läslo Evers, the impact of the earthquake in Tibet is severe: collapsed houses, people trapped under rubble, damaged infrastructure, and potential fires caused by gas lines.
