In Myanmar, at 7:20 AM Dutch time (12:50 PM local time), a severe earthquake occurred with a magnitude of 7.7. The earthquake took place near Sagaing, 250 kilometers north of the capital Naypyidaw. An aftershock of magnitude 6.4 followed 12 minutes after the main shock.
Myanmar lies on the boundary of two tectonic plates, the Eurasian and Indian plates. Various faults in the region have also led to severe earthquakes of 7 and higher in the past, resulting in many casualties.
The earthquake today was strongly felt in the region, such as in Bangkok (Thailand) over 1000 kilometers away and in West Bengal, India, 800 km away.
