The Russian peninsula of Kamchatka was struck last night at 01:24 Dutch time (11:24 local time) by an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8, at a depth of 19 kilometers. The epicenter of the quake was located in open sea about 130 kilometers from the Russian coast.

Tsunami Warnings

The earthquake last night led to tsunami warnings in, among others, Russia, Japan, the United States, China, Hawaii, and Ecuador. At this time, no casualties have been reported, but a tsunami has flooded parts of the Russian port town of Severo-Kurilsk.

30 Aftershocks

After the severe earthquake, 30 aftershocks were recorded. The tremors had a magnitude between 2 and 6.9, according to USGS.
