His Majesty the King visits the parent initiative The Dream of Schalkwijk in Houten on Wednesday afternoon, September 10, a residential and day care location for severely mentally disabled young adults. It is a living community where residents can be themselves, develop at their own pace, and participate fully in daily life.
The visit of King Willem-Alexander begins in the family house where he talks with the initiators about the origin and mission of The Dream of Schalkwijk. In the family house, residents can celebrate their birthdays with family and friends, but it is also the place where parents can stay close to their child in case of illness.
The residential complex consists of three homes that are interconnected. Each home has a shared living room and kitchen, and each resident has their own studio. The King visits a studio and engages in conversation with several caregivers and parents about this form of living and care.
Through De Hooiberg, where the volunteer workers have their workspace, King Willem-Alexander goes to the day care location on the grounds. Here, residents can work in the vegetable garden, care for animals, and play. In addition to care professionals, residents are supported by over 20 volunteers. The King talks with several volunteers about the importance of their commitment.
The Dream of Schalkwijk was completed at the end of 2024 and 24 young adults live there.
