His Majesty the King will visit the Journalism program at Fontys University in the MindLabs building in Tilburg on Thursday afternoon, October 2.

Fontys Journalism is a higher education program with approximately 900 students and 60 teachers. The program strongly emphasizes journalistic values such as reliability, factuality, critical analysis, verifiability, plurality, and curiosity. For the past four years, a curriculum has been developed where students can explore and develop the different roles of a journalist in society: they practice and work as wonderers, storytellers, fact-checkers, watchdogs, developers, impact-makers, news creators, and interpreters. They use both online and offline resources and learn to work with audio, video, and text. In this way, Fontys University is innovating the profession and training a new generation of journalists, aiming for reliable journalism for an inclusive society and a strong democratic rule of law.

After a tour of the building, the King speaks with students, teachers, and researchers at the professorship about the program and developments in the field of journalism. Students share their experiences with the program and working as young journalists. They discuss with the King the significance of AI for the profession, new forms of storytelling, and how journalists can play a connecting role. Finally, the King participates in a small practical assignment in the schools studio.
