His Majesty the King will open the new factory of tire recycler Circtec in Farmsum on the morning of Tuesday, January 27. The factory is being built in two phases. In the first phase, a substantial portion of the worn tires collected in the Netherlands will already be processed. The complete installation is ultimately designed to process 180,000 tons of used tires per year.

The worn tires are converted in a reactor into three new products. The black filler from the tires is recovered and can be reused for new tires. New plastics are made from the released liquids. The biofuels obtained will be used in the future to make international shipping more sustainable.

After the plenary session and the opening ceremony, King Willem-Alexander will receive explanations about the production process at various displayed products, machines, and photo collages. Finally, he will speak with representatives of Circtec and partners about the companys impact on the region.

The British company Circtec was founded in 2009 to give worn tires a good new purpose through chemical recycling. When the factory is fully operational, the CO2 reduction from this project will correspond to approximately 5% of the CO2 emissions of the entire chemical sector in the Netherlands. This contributes to creating a circular economy. The plan is for the factory to operate at full capacity by the end of 2028.
