Her Majesty Queen Máxima will christen the research vessel Anna Weber - van Bosse of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) on Thursday afternoon, March 12. The christening will take place on Texel in the NIOZ harbor. The ship enables oceanographers to conduct research from the water surface to the deep sea and from the poles to the tropics.
After the christening, Queen Máxima will receive a tour of the ship. In the wheelhouse and various laboratories, she will speak with the crew and scientists who will use the ship for their research activities.
The new research vessel is nearly eighty meters long and operates with modular container labs, allowing for interchangeable containers depending on the type of research. To be prepared for the future, the ship is equipped with expansion options for additional equipment and sensors and more sustainable fuel methods. The RV Anna Weber - van Bosse is named after the first Dutch female biologist who made a substantial contribution to Dutch marine sciences.
The RV Pelagia, the predecessor of the new research vessel, was christened by Queen Beatrix in 2001.
