Her Majesty Queen Máxima will open the restored Carpet Museum in Genemuiden on Thursday afternoon, September 11. The museum showcases the history and development of the carpet industry in Genemuiden.
Queen Máxima will open the museum, take a tour, and speak with stakeholders and volunteers about the restoration of the museum and the development of the carpet industry. She will also look at traditional rush weaving crafts.
The museum, which is entirely run by volunteers, shows how the carpet industry has been connected to Genemuiden for generations. The flooring industry began in the 16th century with the production of rush mats. From 1918, coconut and sisal mats were made, initially manually on a mat frame and from 1924 also in factories on weaving machines. Later, the production of woven wool and nylon carpets followed. Currently, synthetic carpets and grass carpets are made in Genemuiden using tufting machines.
