Her Majesty Queen Máxima will open the new theater of KamaK on Wednesday afternoon, February 18, in Hengelo. The professional theater company KamaK works with actors with intellectual disabilities. With a team of theater makers, music teachers, and a large number of volunteers, several productions are developed and performed annually.
After the opening ceremony, the actors of KamaK will perform several scenes from the current theater production ‘De Tulp’. The production is about a tulip that is chased away and searches for a new place. The story represents the journey KamaK has taken in realizing the new theater.
After the performance, Queen Máxima will receive a tour and speak in, among others, the makeup room and the workshop with actors, staff, and volunteers. Subsequently, a theater and improvisation workshop by the actors of KamaK for students will follow in the theater hall.
At KamaK, the actors work three to five days a week on productions and follow training in acting, music, and movement. Through these trainings, they develop their communication skills, speech, and motor skills. The work behind the scenes and catering are also part of their program.
The social themes of the productions have the side effect that the actors think and talk about these topics and thereby also gain knowledge. Additionally, they learn to safely handle situations they find difficult in their daily lives.
