Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands will attend the last concert of the season of the European Union Youth Orchestra at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening, August 20.
Under the direction of conductor Iván Fischer, the youth orchestra will perform Romanian Rhapsody by composer Enescu. After that, three compositions by Stravinsky will be played: Scherzo à la russe, Four Norwegian Moods, and The Firebird Suite. Violist Alina Ibragimova will perform Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto as a soloist.
The European Union Youth Orchestra is the youth orchestra of the European Union. The orchestra was founded in 1976 to promote cultural cooperation, unity, and friendship among European youth. It offers young talented musicians the chance to gain international experience in collaboration with famous conductors.
The orchestra consists of 140 young people aged between 16 and 26. The orchestra members are selected each year from more than 3000 candidates from the member states of the European Union. A place in the orchestra often means a stepping stone to a career with one of the major European orchestras. The concert on August 20 is the last of a European tour.
