The KIC call Unlock the Power of the Digital Twin for Grid Operators, a collaboration between NWO, TenneT, and the Topsector Energy, is now open for pre-registrations. This program welcomes interdisciplinary research proposals for the further development of Digital Twin technology for the energy sector. The focus is on developing key building blocks for this technology, such as new methods, algorithms, architectures, and models. Applicants will collaborate through synergy workshops to submit a joint proposal.

Thanks to the real-time monitoring capabilities of Digital Twins, this technology can play an important role in finding solutions to the challenges facing the Dutch energy grid, such as grid congestion. It can also help underpin policy decisions. However, the use of Digital Twins in this sector is still in its infancy. With this KIC partnership call, NWO, TenneT, and the Topsector Energy aim to stimulate this technological development. The goal is to develop a workable prototype of a Digital Twin within the awarded research project.

Budget and Deadlines

NWO, TenneT, and Topsector Energy jointly provide 20ac5,760,000 for this call. It is expected that one application will be granted.

The deadline for submitting pre-registrations is Tuesday, February 10, 2026, 14:00:00 CET. From these pre-registrations, a selection will be made for participants in the synergy workshops. During these workshops, participants will work towards a joint research proposal. The dates for these workshops are not yet finalized but will take place between April and July 2026. The deadline for submitting final applications is Tuesday, August 25, 2026, before 14:00:00 CEST.

NWO-KIC: Innovation Programmes in the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant

NWO develops innovation programs focused on the societal challenges of the Netherlands with the aim of creating impact for the economy, people, and society. These programs emphasize collaboration between knowledge institutions, private parties, and government. The results contribute to realizing economic opportunities. It is therefore essential that private parties invest in every research project.
