With the recently opened call, NWO and the Brazilian FAPESP aim to stimulate the transition from fossil resources to circular alternatives based on biomass within the chemical industry. A total of 3.84 million euros is available for public-private research consortia. The call focuses on joint research between scientists, companies, and social organizations from the Netherlands and the Brazilian state of São Paulo.
Purpose of the call
The transition in the chemical industry from fossil resources to bio-based materials involves technical, social, economic, and legal changes. To find solutions to these problems, NWO collaborates in this program with the Brazilian FAPESP to connect scientists, industry, agricultural companies, and societal partners. The research should include multiple perspectives on bio-refineries such as chemical technology, (business) economics, sustainability/environment, social, and legal aspects. Additionally, the research focuses on two important subthemes:
- Raw materials based on biological sources;
- Conversion processes.
Budget and duration
For this call, €3,840,000 has been made available by NWO and FAPESP. The deadline for submitting a mandatory letter of intent is June 23, 2026: 14:00:00 CEST and June 23, 2026 23:59:59 BRT. The deadline for submitting a full application is October 20, 2026: 14:00:00 CEST and October 20 23:59:59 BRT.
Information and matching meetings
On March 26, 2026 and April 16, 2026, NWO and FAPESP will organize two online matchmaking meetings for the call ‘Integrated bio-refineries for a circular future - improving society and environment through sustainable industry’.
During the matchmaking meetings, attendees will receive more information about the call and have the opportunity to ask questions about the call and the submission process. NWO and FAPESP also facilitate activities to establish contact between potential consortium members. Participation in the matchmaking is not mandatory.
