NWO has opened the call Large-scale Scientific Infrastructure (GWI) - Upgrade 2025 for applications. Through GWI - Upgrade 2025, NWO strategically invests in upgrading operational GWIs related to the national Roadmap GWI, which are located within the applying research organizations.
About this call
With GWI – Upgrade 2025, the GWI is brought to (beyond) state-of-the-art with the aim of extending the operational lifespan of these GWI. Upgrading here involves investments in the renewal of GWI and/or investments in (mutual) strategic connections of GWIs. Greening of GWI can be part of the investments. This call is aimed at GWIs that previously received Roadmap funding and are currently operational; only they can submit an application.

NWO invests in scientific infrastructure
This call is part of NWO’s efforts regarding scientific infrastructure. Together with its partners, NWO works on broad accessibility, renewal, and continuity of scientific infrastructure. This includes highly specialized devices, such as large telescopes or high field magnets, but also virtual facilities such as data and sample collections or biobanks, as well as scientific computer networks and supercomputers. These types of facilities are essential for breakthroughs in all fields of science.
Thanks to its independent position and its overview of the science system, NWO can take the lead in the development of a joint long-term strategy for scientific infrastructure. Additionally, NWO plays a coordinating and significant (co-)funding role in the implementation of this strategy. The goal is a balanced and future-proof ecosystem of high-quality scientific infrastructure for all scientific domains.
