The KIC Mission call System Design in Mechatronics and Optomechatronics requests research proposals focused on optimizing (opto)mechatronic (OMT) systems and their design. These technologies play an important role in various industries such as medical, agricultural, and semiconductor industries. There is 7 million euros of funding available within this research program.

Although the Netherlands remains a leader in complex high-tech equipment, innovation and stimulation of research remain necessary to maintain this position. The demands placed on this equipment are increasing, and the technology itself is becoming more complex. With this call, NWO invites researchers to submit applications for interdisciplinary research projects where fundamental and practical approaches come together.

Research proposals can focus on one of the five sub-themes of this research program, namely:

  • Design tools for OMT systems to optimize the design cycle with AI
  • Actuator, sensor, and control technology of OMT systems in advanced robotics and new applications
  • Metrology and optical technology in high-tech systems
  • Miniaturization of OMT systems
  • OMT design tools for unstructured/extreme environments

Consortium Formation

To support consortium formation, NWO is organizing a matchmaking meeting on December 11, 2025. During this meeting, potential applicants, companies, and social organizations can get in touch and discuss collaboration opportunities. Registration can be done via the meeting page below.

Budget and Deadlines

A total of 7 million euros is available within this call for proposals. Per project, NWO finances a minimum of 600,000 euros and a maximum of 3,200,000 euros. Additionally, there is a co-financing requirement of 20 percent of the total project budget. This co-financing can also be provided in-kind.

The deadline for submitting applications is April 21, 2026, before 14:00:00 CEST.

NWO-KIC: Innovation Programs in the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant

NWO develops innovation programs aimed at the social challenges of the Netherlands with the goal of creating impact for the economy, people, and society. These programs emphasize collaboration between knowledge institutions, private parties, and government. The results thus contribute to realizing economic opportunities. It is therefore essential that private parties invest in every research project.
