The SGW Open Competition XS will also be offered in 2026 with three rounds. SGW researchers who obtained their PhD at least 5 years ago and have a promising idea can submit an application. The first round opens in November 2025. There are several major changes in this Call for proposals compared to the previous Call. We list the changes below.

Changes Compared to the Previous Call for Proposals

More information can be found in the Call for proposals.

  • The eligibility requirement regarding the PhD date has changed from 5 to 10 years to starting from 5 years.
  • The maximum duration of an XS project has changed from one year to a maximum of two years if the research allows it. The minimum duration of half a year remains unchanged.
  • Applications will be divided into three panels consisting of different disciplines. The classification of disciplines across the panels has been adjusted. A list of disciplines per panel can be found in the Call for proposals.
  • The substantive assessment consists of two aspects. The explanation of the assessment of the feasibility of the research plan has been adjusted.
  • An own contribution from the own institution remains possible, but if applicable, a statement of own contribution must already be submitted with the application.

Information Meeting

On November 18 at 14:00, NWO will organize an online information meeting about the Open Competition XS 2026. During this meeting, the changes mentioned above will be discussed. There will also be ample opportunity for questions. Both potential applicants and subsidy advisors are warmly welcome.
