In this third joint call, 10,588,522 euros have been made available for scientific research into innovation in quantum technology. This call aligns with the National Growth Fund Program Quantum Delta NL and targets scientists from universities and universities of applied sciences.

Quantum technology is an innovative research field with applications in, for example, cybersecurity and more powerful computers. By conducting groundbreaking research, the Netherlands can lead worldwide in the application of quantum technologies.

About the call

The aim of this call is to stimulate, strengthen, and reinforce fundamental research of high scientific quality that forms the basis for new innovations in quantum technology that align with the Catalyst programs of the Quantum Delta NL Growth Fund proposal. These are:

  1. Quantum computing and simulation
  2. National quantum network
  3. Applications of quantum sensing.

Applications can be submitted by one principal applicant, with optionally up to one co-applicant and/or one co-financier. A maximum of 750,000 euros can be requested per project. The application deadline is March 3.

A special feature of this call is that recently graduated researchers can apply for a personal research budget. This aims to stimulate young talent in quantum technology. This was also possible in previous calls in this context - which was well utilized. Therefore, it was chosen to continue this successful module.

Unlike previous calls within this framework, TO2 institutions can now also submit applications, and the ceiling for personnel costs for universities of applied sciences has been removed.  Furthermore, the current call also allows room for collaboration within a project. For this, a maximum of two positions can be requested by a principal and co-applicant who have complementary expertise.

About Quantum Delta NL

Quantum Delta NL works on the development of quantum hardware and software, talent and ecosystem development, and societal impact. With the allocation of 615 million euros from the National Growth Fund in April 2021, Quantum Delta NL is rolling out a program with three catalyst (KAT) programs and four action lines. In KAT-1, work is being done on Quantum Inspire, the first public European quantum computer in the cloud. In the KAT-2 program, the foundation is laid for the next generation of digital infrastructure in the Netherlands and a quantum internet is being developed. In KAT-3, companies and knowledge institutions collaborate on the development of technology and applications of quantum sensing. Additionally, the program includes action lines across all links of the ecosystem: research and innovation (Action Line 1), entrepreneurship and ecosystem development (Action Line 2), talent (Action Line 3), and societal impact (Action Line 4). The current call implements Action Line 1 ‘research and innovation’.

Quantum Delta NL is the foundation that connects the main knowledge institutions in the field of quantum technology in the Netherlands and implements the Dutch National Agenda Quantum Technology. The mission of Quantum Delta NL is to further strengthen the flourishing Dutch quantum ecosystem to become the most relevant for Europe.

Programs for the National Growth Fund

NWO carries out thematic programs for research, knowledge development, and innovation financed by the National Growth Fund. The results are applicable in innovations and organizations and thus contribute to the sustainable earning capacity and broad prosperity of the Netherlands. In the programs, parties from the entire knowledge chain collaborate, both public and private.
