As of February 1, 2026, NWO will end the ongoing program ‘Collaboration Germany - von Humboldt Foundation (VHS)’. This program has facilitated exchanges of knowledge and expertise between Dutch and German researchers since 2005. Researchers currently applying can contact NWO for further information.

Within the program, there were two research awards each year for Dutch senior researchers and two research awards for German senior researchers. With the award, they could conduct research for four to twelve months at a German or Dutch research institution. Dutch researchers could nominate German researchers, and vice versa. The Von Humboldt Foundation (VHS) provided awards for Dutch senior researchers; NWO financed the awards for German researchers from the Science Diplomacy Fund.

NWO has chosen to end the program to make room for a new approach to the Science Diplomacy Fund. This aligns with NWOs renewed international policy, which focuses more on collaboration around three global transitions and less on cooperation with specific countries. The department International Programs is working on a proposal that supports this policy and creates new opportunities for thematic international collaboration.
