Knowledge, research, and innovation; important topics for the future of the Netherlands. Yet, they are often not themes that come up frequently during election time. For this reason, the Knowledge Coalition is organizing the election debate for research and science on October 21.
The Power of Knowledge, Choosing Progress
During the debate, Luc Stultiens (GroenLinks/PvdA), Claire Martens-America (VVD), Jan Paternotte (D66), and Marcel Hanegraaff (CDA) will discuss the future of knowledge, research, and innovation in the Netherlands. Topics will be addressed that affect not only higher education and science but also society and the economy as a whole. For instance, there will be discussions about how research funding is structured and what choices need to be made. The central question will also be how the Netherlands can strengthen its innovation capacity to achieve sustainable economic growth. Additionally, the international competition and how we can retain and attract talent will be discussed in conjunction with the European Multiannual Financial Framework. Finally, the value of research itself will be discussed, from fundamental and unbound research to the protection of academic freedom.
Marcel Levi, chairman of the Knowledge Coalition, will welcome the participants with a provocative introduction. Under expert guidance, politicians from various parties will further engage in conversation on Tuesday, October 21, at Nieuwspoort.
