In the future energy system, a significant role is reserved for nuclear energy as a stable, affordable, and reliable supplement to wind and solar energy and as a CO2-free energy source. With an eye on the future, the Netherlands therefore wants to invest in knowledge and innovation development in the field of nuclear energy. To support research on innovative nuclear reactors and fuel concepts, NWO is expected to open a call for proposals in the autumn of 2025. Approximately 6 million euros will be available for this call, which is expected to be awarded to one research project. This is the first call within the multi-year research program National Research Program on Nuclear Energy
The call Technology for Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuels invites consortia of collaborating parties to conduct research into the development of so-called Generation IV reactors, microreactors, and new fuel concepts. Important themes include increasing reactor safety, investigating the suitability of materials for extreme conditions, and developing monitoring systems. Collaboration with companies is essential, where companies can provide the required co-financing (5 percent) both in cash and in kind (for example, through the deployment of personnel, knowledge, or facilities).
Multi-Year Research Program
This call is the first within the multi-year research program National Research Program on Nuclear Energy. The government has decided to give nuclear energy an important role in the future Dutch energy system. To contribute to this, the National Research Program on Nuclear Energy has been developed. The program aims to strengthen and future-proof the nuclear knowledge base in the Netherlands. In 2026, another call will follow within this research program focusing on other aspects of research in the field of nuclear energy, namely the themes Radiation Protection and Radioactive Waste and Geological Disposal. During the duration of the program, it is expected that more calls will be added, the themes of which will be announced later. The funding for this multi-year research program comes from the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
Disclaimer
This message is a preliminary announcement of a research program by NWO. The possibility to apply for funding will open after the publication of a call for proposals in the Staatscourant.
