The upcoming KIC Call Consumer Behavior for a Circular System Transition is expected to open in early June. The Call focuses on finding effective ways to help people consume more sustainably. This is done with a broad view of the entire system, contributing to the transition to a circular economy.
The transition to a circular economy requires fundamentally different consumption patterns. Although there is already significant support for a more sustainable society, targeted interventions are needed to stimulate actual behavioral change at a systemic level. The aim of this Call for proposals is to gain insights into effective interventions, measures, and strategies that promote circular consumer behavior, based on state-of-the-art research on system transitions, behavioral change, and the circular economy. This Call for proposals focuses on research that analyzes, designs, and applies interventions. The interaction between behavioral, systemic, and cultural factors is central to this.
Note: this Call still needs to be approved by the Board of Directors.
Collaborative workshops
For this Call for proposals, NWO is organizing two collaborative workshops on June 11 and 30, 2025, at the Culture and Congress Center Antropia (next to Driebergen-Zeist station). During the workshops, interested parties are brought together around the theme of the Call. In addition to researchers at universities and colleges, representatives of social parties (public and private) are also explicitly invited to these collaborative workshops.
The expertise of the participants and their contributions to the desired impact on the theme of the call form the basis for the discussion. The workshops provide the opportunity to combine ideas and form broad innovative consortia that generate scientific and social impact through the connection of research and practice.

NWO-KIC: Innovation programs in the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant
NWO develops innovation programs aimed at the societal challenges of the Netherlands with the goal of achieving impact for the economy, people, and society. In these programs, the emphasis is on collaboration between knowledge institutions, private parties, and the government. The results thus contribute to realizing economic opportunities. It is therefore essential that private parties invest in each research project.
