On Sunday, June 8, 2025, a detainee held in the detention center at the police station on Beekstraat in Arnhem was urgently taken to the hospital. The man had been given medication in the detention center intended for another detainee. On Wednesday, June 11, the man died in the hospital. An expert determined that the incorrectly administered medication was the cause of death. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is prosecuting the police officer who provided the medication to the victim. The charge is involuntary manslaughter.

The National Police Internal Investigations Department (Rijksrecherche), under the leadership of the OM, investigated what exactly went wrong with the administration of the medication and how this could have happened. The conclusion is that the police officer who handed out the medication to the detainee could have known that the medication was not intended for this detainee and that he did not do enough to verify whether he was giving the medication to the correct person.

Initially, two other police officers were also designated as suspects in the Rijksrecherche investigation because they had a (possibly limited) role in administering medication to this detainee on the day in question. The OM has decided not to prosecute them because it has not been established that their actions significantly contributed to the incident that led to the detainees death.

The relatives of the deceased man and the police officer being prosecuted have been informed by the public prosecutor about the OMs decision to prosecute. In the interest of the privacy of those involved, no further details will be shared until the case is heard in court.
