The Public Prosecution Service has imposed a fine of 500 euros on a 47-year-old man from Rotterdam for assaulting a referee.
The assault took place at a youth football tournament on April 19 in Rotterdam. The victim, a 58-year-old man, was the referee during a football match and was knocked out by the suspect. Footage of the incident was shared online.
Although the victim did not file a complaint, the Public Prosecution Service decided to prosecute the suspect ex officio due to the societal impact. The public prosecutor made it clear to the 47-year-old man that such behavior is absolutely unacceptable, especially during a football match attended by young children. The imposed sentence took into account the fact that the suspect has apologized to the victim.
