In early 2024, the Netherlands was shocked by a series of explosions. Three suspects appeared today in the Hague court for their involvement in causing an explosion and attempted theft with burglary. This concerns explosions in Delft, Amsterdam-Zuid, and preparations for an explosion in Assen. The Public Prosecution Service demanded prison sentences of 60, 48, and 42 months.
The criminal investigation will start on April 17 when two explosions occur early in the morning in the station hall in Delft. The explosions take place at a currency exchange office, where two suspects first blow up the entrance door with an explosive to then gain access to the safe with another explosive. The police immediately launch a large-scale investigation and secure surveillance footage.
It soon becomes clear that the explosion was captured from start to finish. Surveillance camera footage shows two men arriving on a scooter and entering the hall, where two homeless people are also present at that moment. Shortly after, there is an explosion and the suspects flee. Without loot, as the men fail to access the money in the ATM. The damage to the station and the office is enormous and is estimated at 150,000 euros.
“Boom, that is my job”
In the investigation into the explosion in Delft, the police also enlist the help of the public. Attention is drawn to the case in the investigative program Team West, and footage of the explosion is shown. The police also show footage of a suspicious car seen in the area.
Then the team receives “a technical gift,” as the prosecutor explains today in his indictment. Because at the moment when attention is drawn to the case in Team West and detectives “listen in” on conversations of one of the suspects in his car, a complete overview of the explosion is given. It becomes clear that the 27-year-old man, the driver of the vehicle, was also involved in the reconnaissance and was responsible for the package with explosives: “Boom, that is my job,” he says in the intercepted conversations.
Explosion Amsterdam
The investigation accelerates, and three arrests are made in a short time. One suspect turns out to be involved in an explosion on March 26, 2024, at the Amsterdam Zuid station, where more than 10,000 euros were stolen. In the wreckage left behind, the suspect left an electric wire at the entrance of a service point, on which his DNA was found. Ultimately, two explosions can be linked to the suspects.
“The suspects took irresponsible risks, solely for personal gain,” says the prosecutor. “Such acts dominate the media and severely undermine peoples sense of safety. Everything indicates that there was close and deliberate cooperation and a well-thought-out plan in which everyone had their tasks.”
Demand
According to the Public Prosecution Service, all suspects are co-perpetrators of the explosion in Delft. The Public Prosecution Service holds it against the suspects that they showed no concern for the two homeless people present in the station hall.
The 27-year-old man from Capelle aan den IJssel faces a demand of 48 months in prison. The executors, the 27-year-old man from Amsterdam (who is also held responsible for the explosion in Amsterdam) and a 21-year-old man from Almere, face demands of 60 and 42 months, respectively.
The court will deliver its verdict in two weeks.
