The National Criminal Investigation Department arrested a 36-year-old customs officer from Brunssum on April 22. His home and workplace were also searched. The man is suspected of official corruption and violation of official secrecy.
The suspect worked at Customs in Maastricht and is suspected of having shared information about flights and inspections at Maastricht Aachen Airport, possibly for payment, with other individuals. He was presented to the examining magistrate on Friday, April 25. The council chamber decided on May 8 that the suspect will remain in pre-trial detention for at least another 30 days.
In the interest of the ongoing investigation, the Public Prosecution Service will not provide further information about this case.
Serious Corruption
For the proper functioning of the democratic rule of law, it is fundamental that citizens have trust in public administration. This trust is undermined if individuals who work for the government or hold a public office do not behave with integrity.
